The emotional state of primary school students with disabilities in different educational models

Authors: Alexandrova I.E.1

  1. National Medical Research Center for Children’s Health
Abstract

Creating conditions for the favorable psycho-emotional development of children with disabilities (CWD) in the educational process is an important aspect of mental health promotion. In light of the growing number of CWD, the discussion about optimal educational models remains highly relevant. The aim of this study was to conduct a comparative assessment of the dynamics of the emotional state of primary school students with disabilities studying in special education classes and under inclusive education models. The research employed the color choice method (Lutoshkin’s technique) to assess emotional state based on color preferences. Results from 148 assessments demonstrated positive changes in students’ emotional status in both educational models: in inclusive settings, there was a decrease in the share of «discomfort» states alongside an increase in «balanced» states, while in special education classes emotional stability was maintained. These findings support the rationale for integrating the strengths of both models, taking into account individual characteristics of children. A promising direction is the development of combined educational formats (e.g., episodic, partial, or hybrid integration).
